If you’re anything like me, some days your ADHD brain feels like it runs a mile a minute, leaving you feeling scattered and exhausted. One moment you’re trying to remember where you put your keys, and the next you’re mentally juggling a dozen other tasks. It gets tiring.
Learning how to find peace when ADHD feels like too much is not about eliminating symptoms, but about creating pockets of calm in your daily life. It’s possible to feel more centered, even when your mind feels like a whirlwind.

Create a Brain Dump Zone
An ADHD brain often holds onto every thought, fear, and to-do item at once. This mental clutter creates noise and makes it hard to focus. A brain dump helps clear your head. Grab a notebook or open a notes app and write down everything on your mind.
Let it all out without judging or organizing it. This can include:
- Tasks for the day
- Worries about the kids
- Grocery list items
- Ideas for a project
Getting these thoughts out of your head and onto paper frees up mental space. It gives you a visual list you can work with, which feels much more manageable than the jumbled mess inside your mind.
Break Down Your Day
Time blindness is a real struggle with ADHD. A whole day can feel like a huge, undefined block of time, which makes it easy to get off track. Instead of looking at the entire day, break it into smaller chunks. Focus on just the next hour or two.
For instance, from 9 AM to 11 AM, your only goal might be to tackle laundry. After that, you can move to the next block of time. This approach makes your day feel less intimidating and helps you stay present with the task at hand.
Find Your Sensory Soothers
ADHD can make you sensitive to your environment. A noisy room or an itchy sweater can quickly push you into sensory overload. Identifying things that calm your senses can bring you back to a state of peace.
Think about what makes you feel grounded.
- Sound: Do you prefer quiet environments, or does a specific type of music help you focus?
- Touch: Does a soft blanket or a weighted lap pad feel comforting?
- Smell: Can a calming scent like lavender or chamomile help you relax?
- Sight: Does a tidy space or dim lighting make you feel more at ease?
Once you know your soothers, you can use them when you feel overwhelmed.
Talk It Out
Sometimes, the best way to quiet the internal storm is to talk to someone who gets it. Sharing your struggles with a trusted friend, spouse, or therapist can help you feel less alone. They can offer a fresh perspective or simply a listening ear, which can make a world of difference.
Talk therapy, for example, provides a supportive space to explore your thoughts and develop coping strategies. Finding someone who understands the unique challenges of ADHD can validate your feelings and reduce the shame that often comes with the diagnosis. You don’t have to carry this burden by yourself.
Learning how to find peace when ADHD feels like too much takes practice and patience. Some days will be easier than others. The goal is to build a toolkit of strategies that help you navigate the chaos and find moments of calm.
