Tell someone else!
I know I sometimes get so caught up in my daily routine that I forget to take care of important jobs around the house. If you’re anything like me, these habits can be hard to break, especially for your kids. If your little ones have missing assignments or struggle with keeping up with the pace, teach your kids proper time management skills for their schoolwork with these tips.
Help Them Create a Daily Schedule
Sit down with your kids and outline a simple daily schedule. Clear times for homework, chores, meals, and relaxation. A schedule, like a chart or calendar, works as a visual aid to keep them on track and accountable.

Break Big Projects Into Smaller Tasks
Big assignments can feel overwhelming, especially when it’s a large part of their grade. Just like with my own personal projects, I teach my kids to break them into bite-sized pieces and set deadlines for completing each part.
For example, if they have a week to complete a science project, work on the research one day, the experiment the next, and the presentation afterward. Don’t let them wait till the last minute to get it done!
Teach Prioritization
Help your kids identify what tasks are most important to prioritize. Show them how to tackle urgent or challenging schoolwork first and leave simpler tasks for later. This builds strong decision-making skills and improves their focus.
Eliminate Distractions
Sometimes, white noise helps me concentrate on tasks, but any distractions could also lead me toward the screen and away from my work. Kids can be the same way, so remove distractions like TV, excessive screen time, or noisy environments during homework hours. Create a quiet and organized workspace where they can concentrate fully on their tasks.
Use Timers for Better Focus
Timers are a great way to teach time management to your kids. For example, have your kids work for 25 minutes straight and then enjoy a five-minute break. This maintains their focus without resulting in burnout.
Make Time for Breaks
Too much work can leave kids feeling drained, especially after a long school day. Encourage them to step away, stretch, or have a snack between study sessions. Short breaks revive energy and keep them motivated to continue.
Motivate With Rewards
Nothing excites kids more than recognition for their efforts. Celebrate their achievements and set up a reward system for your kids that effectively motivates them to succeed. Small incentives like stickers, extra playtime, or a treat turn schoolwork into a positive experience.
With these time management skills and reward systems in place, your little ones will be able to turn in their assignments with ease. Be sure to write down any important assignments due on your calendar in case they forget about an upcoming project. Soon enough, you won’t have to remind them anymore!
