Packing for any family trip can be an exhausting task. I’ve been there—frantically packing and researching every “what if” scenario, only to still learn the hard way. Today, I’m sharing my go-to strategy for packing for a river expedition with kids, all while keeping your sanity intact. (Spoiler alert—you might even enjoy it!)
Start With the Essentials
Keep it simple; you won’t need half of what you think you will. Focus on the basics that keep everyone dressed, hydrated, fed, and comfortable. Pack lightweight, moisture-wicking clothing for the kids—and yourself!

Then, you will need river-specific items, such as water shoes with good grip, sunglasses with polarization, and hats to shield your face from the sun. Also, bring along a waterproof bag to stash things you need to stay dry, such as snacks, spare clothes, and sunscreen.
Plan for the Unpredictable
Kids and outdoor adventures can create the perfect recipe for unpredictability. Therefore, you’ll need a stash of wet wipes and biodegradable soap to handle muddy hands, faces, and…basically everything.
You’ll also need a couple of other items that are must-brings for safety and comfort for everyone, such as a compact first-aid kit, child-safe bug spray, anti-itch creams, and extra bandages.
Pack To Stay Engaged
Rivers are magical, but even the most adventure-loving kids can grow restless during the quiet stretches. Pack a few compact “treasures” and have them on hand for these types of activities to keep the kids engaged while keeping yourself sane. Think magnifying glasses for spotting bugs, waterproof sketchbooks for doodling riverside creatures, or fishing nets for scooping up pretend “gold nuggets.” Keep them busy, and their curiosity will do the rest.
Another way to entertain the kids is by weaving storytelling moments into the trip. For example, talking about historic stops along the Salmon River in Idaho is a great way to share its rich history while sparking your kid’s imagination.
Use Your ADHD Mom Strengths
Here’s the thing: if you’re an ADHD mom like me, just the thought of organizing this trip might feel overwhelming. However, the hack to making it happen is simple—lean into the structure! Packing is one of those rare parenting tasks that taps into ADHD strengths—goal-oriented, full of problem-solving (hello dopamine!), and perfect for scratching that itch of thinking ten steps ahead.
Take the guesswork away by following a packing checklist for how to pack for a river expedition with kids, allowing for less chance of forgetting the essentials. Don’t waste time on your trip stressing; instead, free up time and attention for things that really matter.
Enjoy the Moment
No matter the task or what is going on, just remember to stay present and enjoy these moments with your kids and family. You can have the best packing strategy ever, but there will almost always be something else you wished you packed or had. Remember, it’s not about perfection; it’s about experiencing the wild and messy magic of nature with your kids.
