If you’re anything like me, you want to decorate your living space with things that you enjoy. I often find decorative pieces or furniture that I love, but unfortunately, they don’t always fit into any sort of cohesive theme. But that’s OK when you know how to add an eclectic flair to your living room.
Eclectic furnishings allow you to decorate based on personal expression rather than sticking to a standardized aesthetic. I’ve got some helpful tips for using your unique finds and pieces to create a cohesive space that harmonizes in its own distinct way.

Mix Textures and Patterns for Visual Interest
A big part of an eclectic style is combining different textures and patterns. For example, you can blend a velvet chair with a crocheted rug or a leather loveseat with plush throw pillows.
Don’t be afraid to mix bold prints or geometric shapes with more traditional styles. With the right combinations, it’s possible to create a cohesive look with a range of different art styles. I find it helps to pick one singular piece as a starting point and center future additions around it. For example, I bought a striped navy rug and paired it with a much more modern coffee table. They work together and help establish a dark blue and white theme that pops while allowing for easy future additions, whether they anchor on the nautical hues or modern aesthetic.
Incorporate Statement Pieces As Focal Points
Another way to add an eclectic flair to your living room is by finding something distinct and making it the focal piece of the room. You may choose some vintage artwork, a unique lighting fixture, or a piece of heirloom furniture that stands out against the wall.
Something that draws the eye from the moment someone enters the room works incredibly well as a focal point. A painting with bright, bold colors can do wonders against a white wall. Statement items allow you to share your story and turn your décor into a conversation starter.
Seamlessly Blend Different Eras and Styles
A problem that I often have with designing is that I don’t want to limit myself to pieces from a single era. I find that every decade has its own stylistic charms, and I can spot some fun pieces that I love throughout history. Personally, I’m willing to place a pastel ’50s vase on a sleek modern coffee table next to a Victorian sofa.
These pieces all have their individual appeal, but they can coexist—it all comes down to what selections you make. As I mentioned earlier, it helps to pick a single unifying element such as color, material, or scale, and carry that consistency across items from different periods. Even the most eclectic pieces can work together.
